Chantel & Saskia's story
Written by Chantel, Saskia's mother:

I feel that I some what wasted so many tears just over 2 years ago when we found out our daughter, Saskia, has a moderate to severe hearing loss. So many tears cried, not because she was hearing impaired but rather tears of worry.

We were in shock. We knew she could hear loud noises such as doors slamming, lawns being mowed and raised voices. But what was the clarity like for her? We were told that with hearing aids she would be able to hear better. As all new parents do, I remember clearly thinking “If only I could give you my hearing”.

After speaking to so many wonderful supportive professionals, with the support of our families and friends we decided (which both my husband and I found the easiest decision so far) to bring our daughter up in a hearing world.

Her hearing aid moulds were made. We chose fluoro pink. At the age of 3 months she was fitted with hearing aids. At our Australian Hearing appointment; the nod from our audiologist told us they were “on”. I managed to blurt “Hello Bubba!”. Saskia flung her head around so fast and looked at me in complete surprise! We both filled with tears of joy, tears of relief, our baby girl can hear us clearly for the first time in her short 3 months of life!!

We started our weekly sessions with our case manager at Taralye when she was 5 months of age. The team at Taralye have become such an integral part of her development. The rewards out way the effort by ten fold.

I’ll never forget the day when Saskia said her first word. I was trying to find a car park. I heard Mumma so clearly from the back seat - I slammed on the brake, stopped in the middle of the road & burst into tears. It was not long before “Mummy”, “Daddy”, & the ever so longed for “I love you” started. Single words grew into short sentences which now extend into longer and longer sentences. Listening to her singing the “The Wheels on the Bus” as she happily plays with her dolls, followed by telling her baby brother Diesel “You're funny Diesel, Saskia loves Diesel”.

We never once questioned our decision and to this day still haven’t. I would not change one little thing about my precious daughter. As all mothers - your children are your life and my life is so much more fulfilled and wonderful since Saskia arrived! Someone once told me that they believed your children “choose” who their parents are going to be. If this is the case I could not be prouder or more honoured that my perfect little girl chose me to be her mummy!
