A Brief History

In 1968, a group of families and early childhood education professionals formed The Advisory Council for Children with Impaired Hearing ("ACCIH").

This group - consisted of Mrs Nancy John M.B.E., Dame Elisabeth Murdoch AC DBE, Mrs Frances Derham, MBE, Mrs Ethleen King CBE, Mr and Mrs Worrall-Jones, Mr John Calvert-Jones AM and Mrs Janet Calvert-Jones AM.

The Advisory Council for Children believed deaf children should have access to the same educational as hearing children.

As result of this vision and the perseverance of this group, many hundreds of Victorian deaf children have learnt to listen and speak.

Taralye refers to the centre in Blackburn opened by the Advisory Council in 1979.

It is now an internationally recognised early intervention centre providing inclusive oral language programs for deaf children and their families throughout Victoria.

In recognition of our collective achievements over 40 years, we have produced a published history of Taralye.

This publication covers Taralye from its beginnings to the present and is known as "Raising Voices: The Story of Taralye".
